It\nmight sound crazy but spring flowering bulbs are planted in the fall\nand summer flowering bulbs are planted in the spring. Confusing? Then\nforget all that, just know it\u2019s time to plant tulips, daffodils,\ncrocus and snowdrops now. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your\ngarden center is sure to have a dazzling display of bulbs and if\nthey\u2019re sold now, they need to be planted now too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nis something so special about the first flowers of spring. Maybe it\u2019s\nbecause we\u2019ve waited so long. After the cold, snow and dark rainy\ndays of winter the first snowdrops shine like sun. They reminds us\nthat spring is truly here and longer days and sunny weather is just\naround the corner. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time Like the Present<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nyou live in USDA hardiness zones 1-7, you should try to plant your\nspring flowering bulbs at least a month before your ground freezes.\nThe very best time to plant them is right now. The sooner you get to\nthe garden center, the better the selection you\u2019ll have. And if\nwinter should decide to come early, you\u2019ll be golden. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Like it Cold<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bulbs\nlike tulips, daffodils, crocus and snowdrops actually need a period\nof cold weather to wake them up and encourage them to bloom. If you\nlive in the southern tier of the U.S., in zones 8-11 you\u2019ll need to\npurchase \u201cpre-chilled\u201d bulbs. They have undergone a simulated\nwinter period and will be ready to grow and flower. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to Plant<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\ngeneral, bulbs like sunny spots in well-drained soil. Avoid areas\nthat have even occasional standing water. Many spring flowering bulbs\nwill be up and blooming even before the leaves on trees and shrubs\nhave emerged and these areas are prime places for bulbs. As they\nbegin to leaf out, they\u2019ll hide the bulb foliage and spent blooms. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Deep?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good rule of thumb is to plant bulbs two to three times as deep as they are tall. For instance, if you have a tulip bulb that is 2\u201d tall, plant it 4-6\u201d deep. You can use a garden trowel but the tool we recommend is called a Multi-Purpose Garden Weeder<\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s a twofer, it\u2019s great for weeding but it\u2019s perfect for planting bulbs too. Throw down a knee pad and get digging<\/strong><\/a>. Make sure to back fill each hole and water well to make sure the soil has settled nicely around the bulb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some people gently toss their bulbs on the ground and\nplant them where they land for a natural look. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
