Fall is here, the season for<\/span> sweatshirts, leaf piles to jump in<\/span>, football games<\/span> and at least one more <\/span>bonfire<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Get the whole family outside one of these bright<\/span>,<\/span> sunny <\/span>days <\/span>to help clean<\/span> up the garden for wint<\/span>er<\/span>. <\/span>Kids will be more excited to help if th<\/span>ey<\/span> have tools their own size. And, in our book, it\u2019s totally <\/span>OK to<\/span> bribe them with hot apple cider and s\u2019mores<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Fall clean up used to mean raking up the leaves, putting them in bags and setting<\/span> them<\/span> by the curb. Today, gardeners realize that leaving the leaves is good for wildlife. <\/span>It\u2019s OK to leave the garden a bit mor<\/span>e natural-l<\/span>ooking, the winter silhouettes can be quite pretty. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Clean Up\u2019s a Breeze and Good for Wildlife:<\/p>\n

  1. Leave the leaves. <\/span><\/b>Leaves are<\/span> a multi-vitamin for your garden, <\/span>a rich source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and trace minerals.<\/span> Leav<\/span>es are a natural blanket for plants<\/span> (not grass)<\/span> and protect them<\/span> during the winter. Leave your leaves in less formal parts of the garden or <\/span>rake them<\/a><\/strong> into shrub borders. You\u2019ll be creating crucial habitat for <\/span>all kinds of wildlife, <\/span>including frogs and toads, <\/span>birds and <\/span>butterflies.<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Make Compost. Leaves m<\/span>ake the most beautiful, natural-<\/span>looking compost. It\u2019s often referred to as leaf mold.  Gather up the leaves with<\/span> an <\/span>easy sweep Leaf Pickup bag<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/span> Ours has<\/span> h<\/span>andles <\/span>and h<\/span>olds <\/span>u<\/span>p <\/span>t<\/span>o 58-Gallons<\/span>, that\u2019s a lot of leaves!<\/span> Rake leaves<\/a><\/strong> into a compost bin for winter. For a finer texture, <\/span>mulch mow it first<\/span>, then go over it with the bag on the mower and empty that into the bin. Either way, you\u2019ll have a natural and nutritious mu<\/span>lch for your beds next spring.<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Let Your Perennials Stand. Understandably, many people have a desire to cut eve<\/span>rything back to<\/span> the ground so the borders look<\/span> tidy. <\/span>Try to resist<\/span>. The spent flowers are often full of seed<\/span>, a<\/span>n important la<\/span>te-<\/span>season food source for birds <\/span>and s<\/span>ome pollinators overwinter in the hollow st<\/span>ocks<\/span>. The <\/span>stems naturally trap blowing leaves to protect the base of the plant from cold winter temps. Next <\/span>spring <\/span>you can <\/span>prune dead stems<\/a><\/strong> and rake off leaves<\/span>.<\/span> \"\"<\/span>\n

  4. Your Lawn Is Hungry. Fall is the best time to feed your lawn. It helps<\/span> the <\/span>grass to put down new <\/span>roots and recover from the summer heat. Try to get an application in a<\/span>t least two<\/span> weeks before the first frost.<\/span> Choose a turf builder or fertilizer specially formulated for fall treatment. Water well <\/span>afterward to help<\/span> the<\/span> grass<\/span> soak up the nutrients<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Veggies Break The No Clean Up Rule. It is a good idea to completely remove all of the plant material <\/span>from your vegetable beds. <\/span>Old, decaying plants could harbor disease. <\/span>Our<\/span> 70-gallon lawn and leaf bag<\/a><\/strong> make<\/span>s<\/span> quick work of it.
