Feeders or flowers? Why not both? Hummingbirds provide so much enjoyment to gardeners, and many of us have experienced the joy of performing garden chores while hummingbirds fly around us. Attracting hummingbirds is not hard, and a good feeder or two with a selection of hummer-friendly flowers underneath is easy for most gardeners to provide.
The Flowers
Watch the hummingbirds in your area to see which flowers they visit. There may be natives you can plant to attract them, or you could plant reliable hummingbird-attracting plants like cigar plant, shrimp plant, or salvia. A mix of flowers provides more choices for the birds and possibly different bloom times. Red flowers attract hummingbirds, but don’t overlook plants with tubular flowers like salvia that have different colors because the birds will visit these, too. Watch the birds as they feed— their long tongues allow them to get deep into the flowers to access the nectar.
The Feeders
Place your hummingbird garden in a location where you can access it easily, as you will need to refill and clean the feeders regularly. Having more than one feeder may be a good idea, as the hummingbirds will attempt to guard the feeders.
Ordinary feeders will do, but why not choose these beautiful ones for your garden?
Centurion’s fiery red to orange gradated feeder stands out and is sure to capture the birds’ attention (and yours!). This feeder provides a burst of color in the garden and may be helpful for attracting the birds in the early season when your flowers are not blooming reliably yet. Eversip Blaze Hummingbird Feeder
Another lovely feeder choice is Centurion’s Aurora feeder. This feeder is clear, but the coating on the glass has a glittering effect. It has traditional red and yellow flowers at the base of the feeder, too.
Sharing Your Garden with Hummingbirds
With these feeders and your garden flowers, you’re sure to enjoy the aerial acrobatics of hummingbirds all season long. Try keeping track of which species of hummingbirds visit, and when your hummingbirds arrive and leave each year (if you don’t live in an area where they can be found all year!). This will help you determine when to put your feeders out again next spring.
